The Clever World of Dick Jr.

Back in mid-2019, I was asked to play guitar on a new release for an artist I hadn’t yet been made aware of: Dick Jr. and his band, the Volunteers. The band is the brainchild of singer/songwriter/actor/producer/director Richard Speight, Jr. and producer Jason Manns. Featuring the fellas who are steadily becoming my favorite rhythm section, the inimitable Rob Humprheys on drums, and Cooper Appelt on bass; with my frequent producing partner Zack Darling at the console, we set about making a rowdy, vintage country record that takes detours down several unsuspecting dirt roads.

The resulting record only features a handful of the cuts we’ve begun, but boy are they some fun barn burners. “Goin’ Straight,” a tune I cowrote with Rich and Emma Fitzpatrick who also sung on the track, has already been featured on the television show, “Supernatural.”
