Producer. Player. In Studio.

Making music with Zachary has made me a better musician. His ear, his playing, and his commitment to finding what is best for the song has elevated my game as an artist and guitar player. Couldn’t ask for a better brother in arms.
— David Redd

I fell in love with the recording studio early. As a kid, I spent infinite hours experimenting with recording techniques on various types of analog recorders. When my teenage band went to the studio for the first time, we had already made carefully layered demos on the 4-track. I considered myself a producer as much as a player even in those early years.

as a producer…

My primary goal is to capture the magic that happens when you bring inspired people together to make music in the studio. Though my experience often guides me back to analog sounds, not all songs are created equally and some are best summoned with as much technology as we have available. I prefer to find the best studio and session players to fit the project—both from a capability and vibe standpoint. Creativity seems best harnessed when the artist is unimpeded by the mundane and free to let their freakiest flags fly. The primary ingredient here is trust. It’s my job as a producer to curate the right setting and the right set of collaborators that allow the artist to fully blossom on record.

as a player…

I work to find my best fit. What part might help the song grow wings. As a rhythm player, I’m a student of Motown and soul guitar players who placed pocket above all else. As a lead player, I have an obsession for melodic, singable solos. I love getting called to put a few, dewy-eyed moments on a great track.

Stylistically, I’m often called for Americana music, pitching either towards soul, blues, country or California-flavored folk-rock. But I also love indie-rock; hiphop; pop; classical/ chamber music; and West & South African, Brazilian & Afro-Cuban world music styles.

I also record at home!

Of course it’s more fun to create, together; but if logistics don’t allow, I have a full guitar recording suite. I work in ProTools and can send .PTX files or Stems of guitar, ready for your tracks. This solution is also great for commercial, television & film music.

Below are a few records I’ve worked on as a producer or player.
